Author Anthony Pitch will speak at KHS Meeting – Tuesday, November 8, 2011 (7:00 cookies & cider, 7:30 presentation)

The Kensington Historical Society is pleased to present author Anthony Pitch November 8th.  We meet on the lower level of the Town Hall.  Come at 7:00 for cookies and cider and visit with neighbors.  Our speaker starts at 7:30 on November 8th, followed by a short KHS meeting.  This event is free and open to the public.

In his latest book,” They Have Killed Papa Dead!” – The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the award-winning author has unearthed new material in his relentless search for diaries, letters, journals and other original documents in private hands and in widely scattered archival repositories. He conveys the human drama of a story he believes to be the saddest in American history. This presentation includes a book signing and sale.

We know many of you will be attending this important hearing to voice your opinions on the Sector Plan, and we have changed our date to accommodate this.

ALL ABOARD KENSINGTON! A Spectacular Model Train Event to Benefit KHS & Noyes Children’s Library

September 10th & 11th will be a wonderful family weekend to follow Labor Day! This year marks the 120th Anniversary of our Kensington Train Station!  Therefore, we are delighted to announce that the NATIONAL CAPITAL TRACKERS will be bringing the action of their model 0 train display, stretching nearly 36 by 72 feet, to the Town Hall through the sponsorship of the Ditto Group and the Town of Kensington. The display will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 to 5:00. (Starting right after the KHS Saturday Concert on Howard Avenue ~ see info elsewhere in this issue.) The Historical Society is adding to your fun with a performance by Matthew Dodd on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at the Town Hall. He will present through song and story what it was like to be a rail splitter, track layer, passenger, engineer, brakeman or switchman or railroader’s wife and child in the days of steam trains. All proceeds will benefit the Kensington Historical Society and Noyes Children’s Library.

The all inclusive entrance fee is $5 for adults/$2 for children/$10 for a family. Your hand will be stamped for reentry to the display. Tickets may be available

KHS Garden Tour: Sunday, June 5, 2011 from 1-4 pm

The Kensington Historical Society will host a garden tour on Sunday, June 5, from 1 to 4 pm.  Seven gardens will be featured within walking distance of Flinn Park, which is located across from the Kensington Post Office at 10325 Kensington Parkway.  The gardens featured spotlight different landscaping challenges for homeowners.

Tour participants can obtain a site map and related information on Sunday, June 5, from members of The Kensington Historical Society from 1 pm onward at Flinn Park.      Tour participants can visit the gardens at their own pace.  Light refreshments will be served at Flinn Park.

Tickets purchased by June 1 are $10/adult (no charge for children).  Checks should be made out to The Kensington Historical Society and mailed to P.O. Box 453, Kensington, MD  20895.  Tickets purchased on the day of the event at Flinn Park are $15/adult.

Next KHS Meeting – Tuesday, April 26: Matthew Dodd Takes Listeners Back In Time to the Civil War Period

2011 Marks the 150th Anniversary of the start of the Civil War!

The next Kensington Historical Meeting will be Tuesday, April 26th at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Kensington.  We will meet at 7 PM for refreshments in the Heavener Hall on the corner of Mitchell St. and Fawcett.  Our program will begin promptly at 7:30 followed by our business meeting.  KHS is proud to present Matthew Dodd, who will take listeners back in time to the Civil War period using songs and stories (humorous and poignant).  During his hour-long show Mr. Dodd will also play guitar, banjo, harmonica, mandolin, and concertina.

Short business meeting preceeds presentation.

An obituary has the “last word” about a person, be he celebrity, rock star, or everyman.  It can be sometimes beautiful, often unexpected and sometimes even humorous.  Join us for a fascinating evening with Adam Bernstein.  Our Historical Society meeting begins with coffee at 7 PM at the Kensington Town Hall/Armory, 3710 Mitchell Street, ground floor.  Mr. Bernstein’s presentation follows a brief business meeting at 7:30.

The KHS Board has sent a letter to the County Council outlining specific portions of the Kensington Sector Plan that the Board feels are not favorable to historic preservation in Kensington
