10308 Montgomery Avenue

10308 Montgomery Avenue is a generously proportioned, gabled, L-shaped cottage, a house plan popular between 1870 and 1920. Its street-front gable provides an opportunity for pattern – in this case, diamond-shaped shingles. Built in the late 1890’s, the house combines a variety of stylistic elements. The main entry with its fanlight and side lights is typical of the Georgian style, whereas the arched porch openings suggest a Romanesque Revival style. Also of interest are polygonal bays, 4-inch clapboard siding, and steeply pitched gable. The north bay was added in 1910 and served as a physician’s waiting room. The name “DR. Eugene Jones” can still be seen on a sign above its entry. The carriage house in the back yard is one of the few remaining in Kensington.
