10410 Montgomery Avenue

10410 Montgomery Avenue, known as the “Bakery” was built around 1915 to be a commercial structure, yet its scale and mass suggest a residence. In fact, the building served both functions. The McKeever family lived in the south end of the building and sold their ice cream in the store front, which is clearly indicated by large display windows and broad stairs. The building balances strong vertical elements – windows, doors, and floor-to-floor heights – with wide eaves and a strong, broad base. People came from outside Kensington for McKeever’s Ice Cream, even on the trolley. This was a gathering place for young people, and students walked from the National Seminary for Girls in Forest Glen.
